JOHN Q. LAWSON FAIA Mr. Lawson has been principal of John Lawson Architects since 1986, where he has been responsible for the design of numerous projects representing a variety of building types from educational and institutional facilities to residential structures. He also has completed planning and feasibility studies for the University City Science Center, University of Guam, the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and private developers in Ft. Worth and Dallas. Prior to founding the firm, he was a partner with Mitchell/Giurgola Architects. Many of his designs have received international recognition, most notably the Lang Music Building at Swarthmore College, and the United Way Building in Philadelphia. Mr. Lawson was educated at Rice and Princeton Universities, and is a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome where he studied the place-making aspects of architectural facades. He taught a design studio at the University of Pennsylvania for fifteen years and has been visiting juror and critic at numerous colleges and universities. Mr. Lawson has also participated on design juries for several local and national awards programs. Mr. Lawson is a registered architect in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Massachusetts and holds a Certificate, National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and a member of the Fellows Steering Committee, AIA Philadelphia. As Chairman of the Urban Design Committee of the Philadelphia Chapter AIA he formulated planning and urban design positions on a wide variety of public projects. He has served as a board member and committee chair of the City Parks Association, Awbury Arboretum Association, and Eastern State Penitentiary Task Force.
