BEACH HOUSE
Loveladies, NJ
An open breezeway separates the guest wing from the main house and frames a view of the ocean as one approaches the entrance. The living room/kitchen -- the center of daily life -- is entered directly from the breezeway. Beyond this space is a dramatic two story dining room for entertaining, a small den and powder room. Exterior wall and roof surfaces are red cedar shingles. Red cedar boards are used for all decks, stairs, trim, soffits, parapets, infill panels between windows, trellis, hidden doors, built in benches and decorative railings.
Sliding glass doors from the living and dining rooms provide direct access to the ocean deck with flanking covered porches providing shade and privacy from neighbors' view for the master bedroom. A lower deck cradled behind the dune and the house provides a place for sheltered sunbathing.
The master bedroom, study and bathroom occupy the second floor under the semi-pyramidal roof. Large windows and intimate small decks provide views of the ocean and bay as well as abundant natural light and cross-ventilation.
The west deck is shaded by a trellis covered with trumpet vine, making this side of the living room green and shady in contrast to the east ocean side. The trellis also defines an outdoor space facing the bay, filters the harsh west light, and provides visual privacy from the road.
