Illuminated cornices at the top of the twin masonry towers reinforce the "gateway" sense at both ends of the bridge as cars pass between them. Filters change the color of the light for different occasions.
The cable suspenders will be lit from the walkway, giving a glow at the bottom of the cables which, with roadway lighting and car headlights, creates a "veil" beneath the main cables. Floodlighting the north and south sides of the anchorage structures gives renewed presence to the important structural role they play, as well as visually anchoring the lighting design. The north and south faces of both towers, and the nose of the each stone pier, are illuminated by bracket mounted floodlights rigged out from the walkway railing. The top is lighted by the existing bay window. The graceful line of the walkway is illuminated as a major design feature since the horizontal span expresses the Bridge's main reason for being. The painted blue cast iron railing is illuminated on the north and south sides of the bridge by globes with frosted ends to diffuse light back and across the railing panels.
