The owners wanted the new addition to "respect and honor" the original architecture of the 1920's Georgian-style house.
An arched dormer on the roof of the playroom over the garage became the inspiration for the all-glass south wall of the addition. Stone walls and slate shingles are used on the exterior to unite the addition with the original structure. A large-scale fanlight over multi-paned window and glass doors maximizes the amount of natural light which enters the kitchen's interior spaces. The dining area of the kitchen was relocated from the north front of the house, which faces the public street, to the south side facing the private, heavily landscaped terrace, yard, garden and swimming pool. The stone wall on the driveway side is extended to create a new set of steps which enlarge the terrace and emphasize the connection of the addition to the garden. A round window allows light to enter the center of
the kitchen at this side counter work sink area. The plaster vaulted ceiling of the dining area continues the curve of the fanlight and softens the natural light which falls along its surface. The dining space is further defined by creating a cross-axis, a groin vault which in turn intersects with the pitched roof of the addition.
