This addition more than doubles the size of the former kitchen and is articulated into two distinct food preparation areas, each with a Corian countertop and integrated sink, and joined by a centrally located granite countertop and cooktop island. This functional portion of the kitchen is defined by a low ceiling within the roofline of the existing structure of the house.
A large roof overhang shields the half round bay window from the south sun in the summertime and yet allows the south light to penetrate into the kitchen in the winter months.
The new roof of the dining area is sloped to create a clerestory which reflects north light into the zone between the work and the dining areas in the new kitchen.
The dramatic contrast between the shape and scale of the new addition and the existing structure is ameliorated by continuing the use of the existing aluminum siding and composition shingles.
